The Plan for this term is to start the research for my Final Major Project's brand.

Things I shall have to research;
  • potential for the market- who, what, where etc.
  • product potential- based on consumer need & based on design possibilities.
  • possible materials- what already out there and what could be possible.

Firstly I would like to begin the same as any normal design project. Later, when the product has been realised, I would then like to think about the brand.

the beginnings of the puzzle

So... what is the mission behind the Jacques Eyewear Label?

To provide a range of attractive eyewear that can be worn comfortably while driving. These sunglasses should hold no glare on the lens, and should cover the majority of the eye view.
The eyewear brand is youthful, but smart, targeting powerful women. I believe this is where the future is.

There should be a range for every mood in eyewear. eccentricity, blending in, a classic look and the modernist. The frames shall all be made uniquely, as the hinges shall be much stronger and the frame much more durable.

The real need
There is a need for a product that is a mid to high range in price. Above mid range expenditure but without spending too much purely for the label, but this shall change depending on who the market are. I believe the customer shall initially buy the product for the advantage in their appearance.

Finding the correct price point for this is very important.

Raybans are the product that people save to buy, even though these products are lacking individuality, style or innovation. These products are for the sheep and those who like to blend. We all believe we are unique, especially when it comes to our facial appearance. Sometimes we feel the need to hide by wearing dark glasses, but on a sunny day we like to express ourselves.

The Plan

research into markets

  • understand the customer; who is the best market to head for, that would correlate with my style
  • where is it? online? uk based? somewhere warmer?
  • how do we reach those markets?  3D
think of materials
  • look into potential materials
  • think recycling, or reusing
  • think lightweight but constructive and durable
think about shape
  • how it would be influenced by the customer
  • who would wear it, why, what occasions,
think about the USP
  • what can make us different for the better?
  • what will the customer want?
  • is it to do with the marketing, how the product is launched?
  • is it to do with the shape or function of the product?
  • is it the packaging?
the company
  • who are the competitiors?
  • what do they do differently?

starting with the product

I would like to think about the product and the market I would like to target.

Firstly I would like to clarify that my main interest and plan of action shall be all sunglasses based.
There is something mysterious and yet intriguing about the shaded eye, I feel the potentials for future editorials and campaigns, also influenced by the design, could be pushed further and could be very exciting.

I want to aim my product to 25-35 year old women that are looking for something unique. I believe there is a stronger market for women's eyewear than men's currently. I feel there is huge potential for the men's market and would be something I would later like to experiment with.

So many British people wear the same sunglasses and do not like to stand out.
Sunglasses have the potential to add so much to ones facial appearance, and yet so many follow like sheep, looking all exactly the same.

From travelling around Paris and noticing how seriously the French mass market take their appearance; However it is not in the way I would've expected.
They do not seem to wear make up in the same way as the British, the French seem to simply care very little of the impression they give others. Instead they wear things that please themselves and what they feel comfortable in.
Similar to make-up, the French (as with the Italians) delight in wearing more enjoyable eyewear. With an optician on every boulevard, eyewear is a very important part of their outfit.

Perhaps it would be interesting to see why the British usually wear such mundane frames.
Is it the lack of choice on the market? Do we care too much about what others think of us?
Perhaps being creative and unique isn't celebrated enough in the UK by the mass audience.

should I think about making a product that will appeal to the British market? Or is this limiting?
